Our History
In 1990, Ed Bopp founded Fusion Color Guard, Inc. as a spin-off of Colonial Brigade, a program he originally started in 1975. The name “Fusion” was chosen to represent “the joining of two or more things to form a single entity.” Within a few years, the organization grew to include both an A Guard and Fusion Junior. Fusion A & Junior enjoyed many successful seasons throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, earning promotions from Junior to Novice and eventually into the A Class. During this time, Fusion competed across the Mid Atlantic Indoor Network, Tournament Indoor Association, and Winter Guard International circuits.
After the 2014 season, Fusion took a two-year break before returning to the floor in 2017 in the Independent Open Class. This return featured a new generation of performers, many of whom came up through Fusion Core, with members representing the tri-state area. Fusion placed 10th at the WGI World Championships Finals in Dayton, Ohio. During the 2018 season, Fusion Winter Guard was promoted mid-season to the Independent World Class – an important step that moved the organization into the highest level of competition. The 2019 season marked Fusion Winter Guard’s first full year in Independent World Class, advancing to Semi-Finals for the first time and finishing 20th at the 2019 WGI World Championships.
Fusion returned in 2020 for its second full season in Independent World Class. Although the COVID-19 pandemic brought the season to an early end, Fusion finished the year ranked among the Top 6 winter guards in the world. As the pandemic continued into 2021, Fusion took the season off to regroup and prepare for the seasons ahead.
In 2022, Fusion reached a major milestone by placing 10th (86.400) in Independent World Class Finals at the WGI World Championships, marking Fusion's first appearance in Independent World Class Finals. That same year, Fusion Winter Guard was selected to perform in the 2022 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, making Fusion one of the first traditional winter guards to perform for thousands in the historic and nationally loved parade.
Building on that momentum, Fusion finished 4th (93.950) at the 2023 WGI World Championships, becoming the highest-placing Independent World Class winter guard from New Jersey at the time. In 2024, Fusion was named the Winter Guard International Independent World Class Champion with a final score of 95.40, becoming the first Independent World Class Gold Medalist from the state of New Jersey. That same year, Fusion was also named the Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network Independent World Class Gold Medalist with a final score of 96.60. In 2025, Fusion reached another milestone by completing an undefeated WGI Regional season and finishing 6th (90.85) at the 2025 WGI World Championships.
Fusion continues into the 2026 season with appearances across the MAIN and WGI circuits, along with community performances in Metuchen, NJ and Long Island, NY.
