Our History

In 1990, Ed Bopp created Fusion Color Guard, Inc., as a spin-off of Colonial Brigade – a program he started back in 1975. The name “Fusion” was chosen because it meant “the joining of two or more things to form a single entity.” In just a few years, Fusion had both an A Guard and welcomed Fusion Junior. Fusion Jr. celebrated numerous successful seasons with promotion from Jr. to Novice and then into the A Class.

Fusion took 3 years off after the 2014 season. They returned to the floor in 2017 in the Independent Open Class. In their first year attending WGI World Championships, Fusion Winter Guard IO placed 10th at WGI world finals in Dayton, Ohio. Their second year in return, Fusion Winter Guard was promoted mid-season to the Independent World Class – an honor that hadn’t been given to a program in over a decade. In 2020, Fusion returned for its second full year in the Independent World Class. Although the COVID-19 Global Pandemic caused an abrupt end to the 2020 season, Fusion ended among the Top 6 guards in the world. In 2022, Fusion placed 10th (86.400) in the Independent World Class at WGI World Championships, which marks the first time Fusion Winter Guard has appeared in Independent World Class Finals. In the same year, Fusion Winter Guard was selected to perform in the 2022 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City – establishing Fusion as one of the first traditional Winter Guards to perform for thousands in the historical and nationally-loved parade.

In 2023, Fusion ranked 4th (93.950) at the WGI World Championships, placing them as one of the highest ranking Independent World winter guards from New Jersey.
